the cast of the World of Darkness game I’ve started playing in. From left to right it goes Angus Wique, Trent Matthews, Chloe Walken (my character), and Adam Sanderson. It’s a pretty cool little game and I love pretty much all of my party members.

And guess who has all of their lives right in the palm of his hand?

This system definitely brings out my malicious side. Not the most admirable trait for the manager of a universe, but there you go.

Abrams will publish The Adventure Time Encyclopaedia, the first-of-its-kind, definitive guide to the show’s beloved characters and world. The book was written by Martin Olson, the voice actor for the Lord of Evil on Adventure Time, who narrates the book in character. It also features original illustrations by Renee French, Tony Millionaire, Celeste Moreno, Aisleen Romano, and Mahendra Singh, and is being designed by Sean Tejaratchi. The show’s creator, Pendleton Ward, is contributing original content to the book as well.

I was surprised to find no results when I typed ‘Limyaael’s Fantasy Rants’ into Tumblr’s search feature. This is such a great resource! Not only for fantasy writers, but for all writers (although, her rants focus on fantasy, there is a lot of wonderful advice and insight that could be applied to other genres).

I highly recommend checking it out. There are 400+ rants on various subjects: villains, mentors, body-centred writing (one of my favourites), shapeshifters, writing sex scenes, subplots, worldbuilding, twins, conlangs, wanderlust… you name it and she’s probably ranted about it.

If you scroll to the bottom of the list, they’ve also organized it by topic. I warn you, though, her rants are so engaging and helpful, you might be spending the next week reading through all of them. (Time well spent, in my opinion).

I remember these! From back in the day. If my memory timeline is correct I spent my evenings reading her rants before migrating to tv tropes.

Quality stuff.

I really enjoyed reading all these.. must resist urge to procrastinate by reading yet more I might have missed.

there were two explosions in copley square near the end of the finish line

a reliable news channel here reported on a third, controlled explosion, so it was likely that a bomb squad found the explosion and set it off themselves

the people who run the marathon have called the explosions a bomb, but NOTHING has been confirmed by the police

22 people have been injured and 2 people have been confirmed dead— injuries are severe and include loss of limbs in some cases

yes, there was a fire in a wing of the jfk library that occurred almost immediately after the explosions were set off, but no one knows if they incidents connected yet

the victims have started arriving at the hospital and are being treated for their injuries now

the train and most streets are being closed off

the fbi is on its way to the site of the explosion right now

the president HAS been notified of the explosion

if you live in/near boston, please just stay as far away from the explosion site as you can and allow people to do their jobs. if you have family in the area that you’re worried about, call them rather than going down to check on them.

Inspired by Anita Sarkeesian’s Video Game Tropes vs Women, I wanted to pitch a Zelda game where Zelda herself was the hero, rescuing a Prince Link.

Clockwork Empire is set 2,000 years after Twilight Princess, and is not a reboot, but simply another iteration in the Zelda franchise. It just so happens that in this case, Zelda is the protagonist. I’m a very big Zelda fan, and worked hard to draw from key elements in the continuity and mythos.

This concept work is meant to show that Zelda as a game protagonist can be both compelling and true to the franchise, while bringing new and dynamic game elements that go farther than being a simple gender swap.

As usual, Diaz’s redesign delivers great art and interesting ideas, but misses some important points.

My biggest issue as that he wants to go further than “a simple gender swap,” but his Zelda is essentially Link-but-a-girl and his Link is essentially Zelda-but-a-boy. You know what would be rad as hell? Playing as a Zelda who’s a heroine AND a Princess. Royalty doesn’t equal helplessness! Maybe you have to save some mute bumpkin from the big bad evil guy who knows about the kid’s connection to the Triforce.

word on the street is that Strix Chronicles is changing the rules of vampires so that they can walk around at day. I am unambiguously in favor of this.

on the one hand i kind of enjoyed the thematic idea of vampires never again seeing the sun and living in eternal darkness

on the other hand it stretches credulity that a vampire would be able to maintain any sort of mortal identity or control over a mortal institution if they’re never awake during business hours (how do all those rich ventrues own companies or whatever????) so,

maybe vampires don’t have to drink blood either… they’re just like humans but just kinda really mean and intense

Well, keep in mind that Dracula could go out in the sun as he pleased, but it limited his supernatural abilities. The powers and weaknesses of vampires that we consider to be definitive are largely influenced by Hollywood (which is why I think the whole “vampires don’t sparkle” thing is a little petty, but that’s another topic).

at the end of All Yesterdays (the extremely good book about imagining and illustrating dinosaurs in complex speculative ways i was talking about yesterday) there’s a section where they prove the point about the fact that we need to be more open to imagining skin coverings and fat/cartilage deposits by illustrating modern-day animals as if a nonhuman paleontologist from millions of years in the future reconstructed them using the just-skin-stretched-over-the-skeleton-and-muscles method that unimaginative paleoartists use with dinosaurs

The fact that dinosaurs actually existed freaks me out sometimes, but not as much as the idea that they were nothing like what we imagined.
